WORLD WAR 2: Websites about events of WW2.

Das Boot
probably peaked more interest into submarines than any other
source and rightfully so, it's an excellent film. U-boats
possibly could have turned the tide of the ww2 had they successfully
put a stranglehold on England. The oldest antisubmarine weapon
is the depth
charge. While highly explosive, the charge must be
within 10-20 feet of the hull of a submarine to cause any
damage due to the strength of the sub's pressure hull. Everything
you ever wanted to know about U-boats can be found here.

The Japanese government switches between acknowledging and
ignoring atrocities they committed during WW2.
Currently it's in the ignoring phase. One horrible moment
in history was in 1937 when the Imperial Army invaded Nanjing.
There began a 6 week orchestrated festival of death. It is
estimated that around 300,000 Chinese were killed with horrible
stories of rapes and killing games. There is a book by Iris
Chang that chronicles the events surround the massacre, otherwise
this page has many links to pages
that discuss the tragedy.

Another little known event in WW2 was Unit
731. When Japan invaded Manchuria this human experiment
"camp" was set up in Pingfan. In the latter part of the
war the Japanese were desperate and looking to new ways to
defeat the 'enemy'. Biological warfare had its roots at Unit
731 and many Chinese and Russian peasants were experimented
on in horrible ways. One of the most brutal films ever, Man
Behind the Sun, examines the events behind this camp
in a nonflinching manner.

I went to Europe in 1996 and was going to write a journal
of my trip. I bought the Diary of Anne Frank and read
it fairly quick. I had written perhaps 2 pages in my journal
and after reading the Frank's diary I quit writing. Besides
everything in my journal seeming petty, the writing level
of this 13
year old far surpassed my writing skills to an embarrassing
extent. This page
has a incredible amount of links to everything about Anne
Frank

Most Americans think D-day
was the pivotal moment in WW2 against the German Army
- yet upon further hitting the books I think no one would
argue that the Russians wouldn't have won the war regardless.
They suffered immense casualties (20 million at low estimate
- recent estimates have projected as high as 40 million) but
slowly beat back the Germans to end the war in Berlin. Here
is a photo
diary a German soldier who is part of the initial
assault against the Russians.

An embarrassing moment for the Russian Army was during the
campaign
against Finland in 1939. Considering the resources
of the Russians (460,000 men and 2,000 tanks) one would have
thought it would have been but a month chore to take control
of Finland (160,00 men), yet the Finns struggled heroically
and made the invading force fight for every inch. After four
months the Red Army still hadn't made much progress. This
site gives day
by day telegrams send throughout the war.
