It is little known that Bil Keane originally had written
the Family Circus to challenge social norms and basically
flip the bird at the world. During Keane's early years in
college it became an underground hit. Once he shopped the
strip to the papers the publishers inevitably forced him to
tone it down where it became as sanitized as shrink-wrapped
wetnaps.
